Sumatra Aceh Buana Mandiri Organic
From one of the top producing regions of Sumatra, the Aceh region, comes an Organic coffee that will blow your socks off! Rich and syrupy with smokey hints of baker's chocolate, cedar and black pepper.
Arrival Date: July 23rd, 2018
Acidity & Brightness: Low acidity with a smokey bite
Balance & Finish: Complex with a lingering finish
Body & Texture: Big, rich body and syrupy texture
Flavors: Baker's chocolate, cedar and a hint of black pepper
Grade: Very hard and dense
Processing: Wet-hulled (semi-washed)
Roasting: Start with a Full City Plus (Medium Dark), or just into the second crack. If you can't hear the cracks, then roast until the beans are smooth and medium dark brown with just the first hint of sheen as the oil emerges. This coffee roasts unevenly, and will appear light for it's degree of roast. Like most Indonesian coffees, this bean handles heat well and you can take it as dark as Vienna with great results.
Reminder: This coffee is raw, you must roast it before brewing
Our Review: It's been a while since we've had a coffee from Aceh, much less an Organic Sumatran, so we're excited about this awesome bean! The Aceh region (pronounced "ahh-chay") is at the northernmost tip of Sumatra and is commonly lumped into Mandheling coffee, which is simply a trade name for high grade arabica coffee produced in the northern regions of Sumatra. Coffee from northern Sumatra is prized as some of the best in the world and is best known for it's most popular processing method: the wet-hull process. Wet-hulling is a semi-wash process that results in a very complex cup with very low acidity which makes for a distinctive single origin cup as well as a prominent blender. We love using wet-hulled coffee in our in-house espresso blend!
This particular coffee is very representative of the Sumatran style: rich, syrupy body with a smokey bite and lingering finish. Look for notes of baker's chocolate, cedar and black pepper. This bean is very dense and handles dark roasting well so feel free to take it all the way into Vienna! Even at that level of roast, you'll still get the taste some of the origin character of this bean. For best results, we like this coffee roasted at Full-City plus (med-dark).
