The Captain's Coffee
This single estate AA is a study in great Kenyan coffee. Exceptionally well balanced with notes of grapefruit, raspberry and lime and a dry tannic finish. Sure to leave you wanting more.
Arrival Date: February 9th, 2018
Acidity & Brightness: Slightly crisp front end, winey sweetness
Balance & Finish: Great balance, dry, tannic finish
Body & Texture: Full bodied, silky texture
Flavors: Grapefruit, lime and raspberry
Processing: Fully Washed, shade grown, hand picked, sun dried on raised tables
Varietals: Kenya SL28 and SL34
Roasting: Start with a City + (Light-medium) and feel free to try Full City (Medium). Kenyan coffees are famous for their crisp acidity and dark roasting will mute that. However, if you prefer, this coffee may be carried into a Full City Plus and still retain a lot of body and most of it's brightness. This coffee roasts very evenly.
Reminder: This Coffee is raw, you must roast it before brewing
Our Review: Last year we had the pleasure of trying this estate's Peaberry and when it came time to select a AA from the long list of high scoring auction lots, it was an easy pick. This coffee is an absolute study in great Kenyan coffee! On the front end, it's delightfully crisp with just the right amount of acidic brightness. It's got that characteristic dry, tannic finish we've come to expect, but it's much more subtle and less "winey" than in past AA lots. Smooth, exceptionally balanced and silky with subtle notes of grapefruit, lime and raspberry. Don't let the high price fool you, there's a reason this is considered premium coffee! It may not be for everyone, but we highly recommend everyone get a taste of high grade Kenyan coffee as it's truly the coffee snobs' coffee!
