Tanzania Peaberry Selian Estate
From Burka Coffee Producers comes this single estate treat. It's crisp and bright as well as balanced with a clean finish. Look for notes of cocoa powder, lemon and lime.
Arrival Date: August 29th, 2019
Acidity & Brightness: Bright and crisp but without a bite
Balance & Finish: Balanced with a clean, sweet finish
Body & Texture: Medium bodied, smooth texture
Flavors: Cocoa powder, lemon and lime
Processing: Fully Washed
Varietals: Bourbon, Kent, SL
Roasting: We prefer this coffee Full City (Medium). This will maintain the crisp, citrus-y notes and still bring out the body. It roasts very evenly and you can take it darker if you wish for a bit more body and to tone down the brightness, but avoid roasts much darker than Full City +.
Reminder! This coffee is raw, you must roast it before brewing
Our Review: The Burka Estates, which includes Burka, Selian and Mondul, is one of Tanzania’s oldest and largest specialty coffee producers. Burka was established in 1899 by a German settler, and shortly thereafter the first coffee trees were planted. After World War I, the estate was declared “Enemy Property,” and it became part of the new British Protectorate in Tanganyika. In 1929, a group of Swiss investors bought the farm; their ownership has continued to the present through independence from Great Britain and the merging of Tanganyika and Zanzibar into present day Tanzania. Permanent staff and their families are provided with housing, medical services, and schooling for their children. The company pays at least 20% above the minimum wage. Burka Coffee Estates produce shade grown Arabica coffee using an eco-friendly and responsible approach to the environment and their neighboring communities.
This coffee from the northern Selian estate is an absolute treat. Very easy to roast and very drinkable. A crisp, bright front end gives way to a medium body and silky smooth texture. The flavors are very balanced with notes of cocoa powder, lemon and lime. Expect a clean, slightly sweet finish. Perfect for an iced coffee on a hot afternoon.
