Tanzania Mbeya Peaberry
Selected from family farms in the Mbeya region, this offering is delightfully sweet with a gentle herbal accompaniment. Silky and easy drinking, look for notes of lemonade, caramel, hibiscus and green apple.
Arrival Date: October 16th, 2020
Acidity & Brightness: Bright and crisp but also very sweet
Balance & Finish: Balanced with a lingering, sweet finish
Body & Texture: Medium bodied, smooth, silky texture
Flavors: Lemonade, caramel, hibiscus and green apple
Grade: Peaberry, grown at 1800 – 1900 masl
Processing: Fully Washed, sun dried on raised beds
Roasting: We prefer this coffee City + to Full City (Light-medium to medium). This will maintain the crisp, citrus-y notes and still bring out the body. It roasts very evenly and you can take it darker if you wish for a bit more body and to tone down the brightness, but avoid roasts much darker than Full City +.
Reminder! This coffee is raw, you must roast it before brewing
Our Review: This coffee is sourced from family-owned farms organized around the Iyela factory located in the Mbeya region, Tanzania. The lowest and highest elevations in all of Africa, the floor of Lake Tanganyika (352 meters below sea level) and Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 meters above sea level) are both located in Tanzania. This coffee growing region is south of these extreme landmarks, formed on the slopes of Mount Rungwe. The rounder shaped peaberry, formed from the maturation of one seed per cherry rather than the typical two seeds, is meticulously sorted during the milling process for its distinct flavor profiles.
Distinct is an accurate assessment for the profile of this particular lot. The word that keeps coming up in cupping impressions is "lemonade" which seems to really capture the crisp yet sugary sweet nature of the cup. Gentle herbal flavors mingle with notes of hibiscus and green apple to amplify the flavor experience. We noted a silky, almost tea like body, which is typical of Tanzanian offerings along with a lingering cane sugary finish. A distinctively delicious coffee!
