Sulawesi Rantekarua Estate Organic
This single estate coffee is unusual for Sulawesi as it is fully washed! Expect the same big, syrupy body but with surprising balance! We love the notes of sweet (but not too sweet) butterscotch, molasses and cocoa powder.
Arrival Date: August 29th, 2019
Acidity & Brightness: Low acidity, surprisingly crisp for an Indonesian coffee
Balance & Finish: Fairly balanced, clean, quick finish
Body & Texture: Bold, rich body and syrupy texture
Flavors: Butterscotch, molasses and cocoa powder
Grade: Grade 1, grown at 2700 masl
Processing: Fully washed
Varieties: Catimor, S795 & Typica
Roasting: Start with a Full City (Medium), or just at second crack. We prefer this one a bit lighter than most Indonesian coffees due to the nature of it's processing. However, feel free to take it as dark as Vienna, it will still hold up really well!
Reminder: This is raw coffee. You have to roast it before brewing.
Our Review: The Rantekarua Estate located on the slopes of Mount Karua at a staggering 2700 meters above sea level in the Bittuang district of Tana Toraja Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The estate is owned and operated by the Sulotco Jaya Abadi group, which has a major processing facility in the Bolokan valley at 1500 meters above sea level. The road from the estate to the processing facility is extremely rough and rocky with the nearest major city (Rantepao) about 4 hours away along unpaved roads.
This is quite possibly the highest grown coffee we've ever had from Indonesia and it's fully washed to boot! A very unique find, it's a pleasure all the way through the cup. While most coffees from Sulawesi and the surrounding islands are wet-hulled, resulting in a more complex and earthy profile, this coffee is well balanced with a very clean finish. We especially enjoyed the warm and sweet (but not too sweet) notes of butterscotch, molasses and cocoa powder.
