Need some budget green beans for seasoning a new drum roaster or for experimentation? Try our Seasoning Blend! Whether it's bag ends, samples or old stock, we always seem to have some random beans sitting around that don't meet our standards for listing but are still good enough for seasoning and basic testing.

And I know what you’re gonna ask next: can I drink these? Well of course not! First you gotta roast, grind and brew em! But seriously, sure you can drink these. They aren’t just beans that fell on the floor and got swept into the corner for a year, by all standards they are safe to drink, except for your first seasoning batch (see roasting notes). Will they taste good? Well, depending on what we have on hand you could be getting organic, direct trade, high scoring coffee from samples we received, or you could be getting year old decaf. More than likely you’ll be getting a little of everything. So we won’t make any promises about the taste, but hey, that’s not why you’re buying these beans anyways! Speaking of which, read on for our seasoning protocol.

If you’re breaking in and seasoning a new drum roaster, our recommended protocol is to roast 5 batches between 50% to 75% capacity to Vienna or about a minute into 2nd crack. We DON’T advise drinking the first batch as it could contain materials from manufacturing like metal shavings and lubricant mixed in. Fluid bed (air) roasters shouldn’t need a seasoning batch, but a first roast or two to ensure function and removal of any possible manufacturing materials is always a good idea.

Reminder! This coffee is raw, you must roast it before brewing

This blend is a mixture of raw, green coffee beans. I will most likely be a mixture of processes and grades, so we make no guarantees on its contents and quality. It is intended purely for seasoning of new roasters and testing.

Recommended Roast Range: Full City to Vienna (Medium to Dark)

Our recommended protocol for seasoning a new drum roaster – Roast 5 batches at 50 to 75% capacity to Vienna roast or about a minute into 2nd crack. The beans should be fairly oily. You can roast lighter but we recommend roasting at least one or two of your seasoning batches darker. We highly recommend you don’t drink the first batch as it may contain materials left behind from manufacturing such as metal shavings and/or lubricant.

Fluid bed (air) roasters typically do not require a break in period, though we think it’s a good idea to run one or two with beans you don’t mind discarding, especially for beginners. This allows an opportunity to test function of the machine across the entire roast spectrum and for the user to get used to their new equipment without expending quality coffee.
