This coffee proves that Rwandan coffee isn't a one-dimensional origin in the best way possible. Unlike past offerings from Rwanda, this coffee is bold, flavorful and even slightly complex. Look for warm, sweet notes of cinnamon, raisin, honey and milk chocolate.

Roasting: We prefer this coffee right at Full City (medium) or just before the second crack, in order to appreciate all it has to offer. However, if the more heavy, spicy flavors appeal to you in the cup, feel free to carry it a bit darker for more emphasis on that part of the profile.

Our Review: "Rwanda FT Dukunde Kawa Nkara is sourced from family owned farms organized around the Musasa mill located near a gorilla habitat in the Gakenke district of Rwanda.  Farmer plots are so small that measurements are based on the numbers of trees, not area of land. Farmers who process their coffee at the Musasa mill are members of the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, which started in 2000 with enough funds to build one wet mill.  In the following years, the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative has built three more wet mills and completed construction of their own dry mill. More than 80 percent of the cooperative workforce is women, and producer-members have used earnings to improve their standards of living with investments in livestock, access to healthcare, and programs to protect the environment, which won the SCAA 2012 Sustainability Award. The quality of the coffee is also internationally recognized, consistently placing as one of the best in the Cup of the Excellence annual auction." - Royal Coffee

Coffee from Rwanda continues to surprise us! Just when we think we've got it figured out as some sort of one dimensional origin, we get thrown a curve ball like this coffee. The last several coffees from Rwanda we've had have been gentle, mild and almost delicate while this coffee is significantly more bold, complex and flavorful! The acidity is on the mild side, the body is full and creamy and it's got a warm sweetness and spicy finish. Look for notes of cinnamon, raisin, honey and milk chocolate. Perfect for those cool, dewy summer mornings on the porch!
