We've got in 3 awesome Rwandan coffees in right now, all from the Nyamasheke region. Think of Nyamasheke as Rwanda's Yirgacheffe! All of these coffees are heirloom Bourbon varietals yet there's delightful diversity represented in preparation method as well as processing styles.
Arrival Date: April 22nd, 2022
Subregions of Nyamasheke: Western Province | Gihombo Sector | Planadas, Tolima
Processing: 2 Washed and 1 Natural
Varietals: All heirloom Bourbon
Roasting: All three perform well for us in the City (light) to Full City (full medium) range. For the best comparison, try to roast all three as closely to the same level as possible and remember that lighter roasts showcase unique origin characteristics the best. Our recommendation is to roast all three to City+, or the tail end of 1st crack, if you're going to compare them side by side.
Reminder: This coffee is raw, you must roast it before brewing!
Review: We're fortunate enough to have 3 different representations of amazing Rwandan coffee in at the same time right now, all from the Nyamasheke region! This area is quickly developing a name for itself as the premier coffee growing region of Rwanda. Our convenient bundle contains 1 pound of each at a discount so you can try them all side by side.
Rwanda Nyamasheke Kamina: Coffee from the Kamina washing station has won numerous Cup of Excellence awards and this coffee is a great example of their work. It's bright, sweet, exceptionally balanced and refreshing. Look for notes of pear, honeydew, lime and a touch of jasmine.
Rwanda Nyamasheke Kivubelt Jarama: This offering is from boutique producer Kivubelt, which owns and operates 3 farms in Western Rwanda. It consists entirely of local Bourbon varieties and features an excellent body and a creamy, almost velvety texture. We noted big flavors of nectarine, orange and cane sugar with a bit of walnut and hibiscus throughout.
Rwanda Nyamasheke Ngoma Baho Natural: Located on the beautiful shores of Lake Kivu, the Ngoma washing station experiments regularly with different coffee processing methods. We went with their natural offering and were blown away. It's incredibly sweet with notes of strawberry jam, fig, milk chocolate and just a touch of clove.
