Mexico Huatusco El Santo
It's been a while since we've had such an impressive coffee from Mexico, but this single origin from Huatusco El Santo blew us away. It's very sweet with good balance and a nutty finish. We love the sweet, mellow notes of Apricot, red apple and honey.
Arrival Date: September 9th, 2016
Acidity & Brightness: Moderately bright, very sweet
Balance & Finish: Good balance and sweet, nutty finish
Body & Texture: Medium body and rich, creamy texture
Flavors: Apricot, red apple, and honey
Grade: SHG – Strictly High Grown
Processing: Fully washed
Varietals: Mundo Novo, Garnica, Bourbon, Typica
Roasting: We like this coffee best right at Full City (medium). Feel free to take it a bit darker into Full City + if you're looking for a bit more body, though you may lose some of the sweetness and creamy texture. This coffee is a bit less dense than some Central American SHG's, so dial the heat back just a bit for best results.
Recommendation: If you usually put sugar in your coffee, be sure to try this one without first! It's sweet and fruity and downright delicious as a black coffee.
Reminder! This coffee is raw and must be roasted before brewing
Our Review: This single origin coffee comes from the town of Huatusco (waah-twos-ko) in Veracruz, Mexico. The farmers here only grow coffee as their agricultural export, so you can bet they take good coffee seriously. The vast majority of the population is indigenous and many of them don't even speak Spanish, instead opting for one of the many local languages. These fine folks have been working this land for a long, long time and no one knows the soil better.
Cupping this coffee was absolutely delightful! The front end is bright with almost no acidic bite. It's got a full body with a creamy, rich texture that fills your mouth without being overpowering. The sweet, mellow flavors of apricot, red apple and honey are present and distinctive but so well balanced in the cup. Finally, the finish is nutty with a bit of a peanut butter aftertaste that left us wanting more. Really fine coffee that absolutely blew us away.
