Kenya Mukuyuni AA
This AA Auction lot from the Mukuyuni Cooperative Society is big, bold and rich. A red-wine acidity gives way to rich flavors of red apple, raisin and apricot with a slightly herbaceous finish.
Arrival Date: December 8th, 2017
Acidity & Brightness: Crisp and bright red wine front end with slight sweetness
Balance & Finish: Great balance, dry, herbaceous finish
Body & Texture: Full bodied, rich, silky texture
Flavors: Red apple, raisin and apricot
Grade: AA, Very Large (18-19 screen), grown at 1,700- 1,850 masl
Processing: Fully Washed, shade grown, hand picked, sun dried on raised tables
Varietals: Kenya SL28 and SL34
Roasting: Start with a City + (Light-medium) and feel free to try Full City (Medium). Kenyan coffees are famous for their crisp acidity and dark roasting will mute that. However, if you prefer, this coffee may be carried into a Full City Plus and still retain a lot of body and most of it's brightness. This coffee roasts very evenly.
Reminder: This Coffee is raw, you must roast it before brewing
Our Review: The Mukuyuni Cooperative Society was created in 1970 to support and assist coffee producers in the Muranga County. The society has grown each decade and they currently have about 1,500 producers contributing coffee to this cooperative. The Mukuyuni society shares resources, technology and quality control procedures to ensure that they produce high quality coffee on a consistent basis. They went from having one wet mill to a network of mills in the Muranga County.
Picks from the Nairobi Auction are always stellar, so it's hard to go wrong when choosing one. We searched this one out carefully, though, as we were looking for a certain profile we haven't had in a while. We wanted a big, rich body and texture with the red wine front end and an interesting finish. We got all that and more with this choice selection! Look for sweet yet subtle notes of red apple, raisin and a touch of apricot.
