Burundi Kanovera A Fair Trade
This delicious grade A crop from the Kanovera Coop in the tiny African country of Burundi is sweet and balanced with notes of caramel, rhubarb and melon.
Arrival Date: May 12th, 2016
Acidity & Brightness: Slightly crisp and sweet
Balance & Finish: Very balanced, clean finish
Body & Texture: Medium body, smooth
Flavors: Caramel, rhubarb and honeydew
Grade: A - Large Beans, very dense
Certifications: Fair Trade
Processing: Fully washed, hand-picked, sun dried
Roasting: We prefer this coffee between City Plus and Full City (Light-medium to Medium). You'll still get plenty of body even when the coffee is on the light side and you'll be able to enjoy the more subtle flavors. You could take it as dark as Full City Plus (Medium-Dark) and still keep the sweetness and balance, but you'll begin to miss the crisp front end.
Reminder: This is raw coffee. You have to roast it before brewing
Burundi is such an underrated producer when compared to it's neighboring giants like Kenya and Ethiopia, but the coffee coming from this country gets better and better every year. Located just south of the Rwandan border in the tiny, landlocked country of Burundi is the small village of Ntamba. In that little villiage, one can find the Kanovera coop which only produces 960 bags of coffee per year. As of this crop, this little coop consists of only 160 farmers, and for the first time, this years' crop has been certified Fair Trade!
We have come to expect more and more from the wonderful coffee from Burundi and this lot is by far the best yet. With aromas of sweet balsa wood and caramel, the first sip of this cup is immediately delightful. On the front, expect this coffee to be slightly crisp and very sweet. We noted more pronounced caramel and touches of rhubarb and even a hint of honeydew. It's balanced and medium bodied, easy drinking and absolutely Springy. It's like a washed Ethiopian but with more body, very much like nearby Rwandan coffee. We'd recommend it as a late Saturday morning starting cup or an afternoon iced coffee.
