Burundi AA BUMOCO Society
This huge AA bean comes from the Burundi High Mountain Coffee Society (BUMOCO). It's crisp and tart with a full body and notes of green apple, lime and white grapefruit. Fans of African coffee will love this one for it's brightness and slight complexity.
Arrival Date: January 20th, 2017
Acidity & Brightness: Crisp with a tart brightness
Balance & Finish: Slight complexity with a clean finish
Body & Texture: Medium to full body with a tea-like texture
Flavors: Green apple, lime, white grapefruit
Grade: AA - Very Large Beans, very dense
Processing: Fully washed, hand-picked, sun dried
Roasting: We prefer this coffee between City Plus and Full City (Light-medium to Medium). You'll still get plenty of body even when the coffee is on the light side and you'll be able to enjoy the more subtle flavors. You could take it as dark as Full City Plus (Medium-Dark) and still keep the body and finish, but you'll begin to miss the crisp front end.
Reminder: This is raw coffee. You have to roast it before brewing
Burundi is such an underrated producer when compared to it's neighboring giants like Kenya and Ethiopia, but the coffee coming from this country gets better and better every year. We only recently tried coffee from Burundi for the first time and we couldn't believe why more people don't know about this coffee. The BUMOCO (Burundi High Mountain Coffee) Society owns and operates the Nyamasaka and Nyagashiha washing stations where cherries are collected from over 200 small farmholders of Burambi and Buyengero. This coffee is from their AA screen so it's their "cream of the crop."
AA's are popular from Kenya but this is the first one we've had the pleasure to try from Burundi. Now as a rule of thumb, AA simply denotes the screen size of the coffee as it's sorted, but it is commonly assumed that the largest beans are the best. While not always the case, we can safely say this is VERY fine coffee! Like many African coffees, this one may not be for fans of the big bold Indonesian coffees or very balanced and full bodied American coffees. It's bright, crisp and slightly tart with a bit of complexity that we find really appealing and interesting. The body is medium to full with a tea-like texture and notes of green apple, lime and white grapefruit. If you're a fan of African coffee or just want to try something different, this coffee is sure to do the trick!
