Comes with a free 6 pound green coffee sampler and ships free! (details below) Better Control, Better Roast Profile, the SR500 has received an upgrade!
The SR540 is an upgraded version of the older model, SR500. The improvements really make this roaster a strong contender in this price range. In fact, it's hard to beat without spending a lot more money.
Although the SR540 is more sophisticated version of the SR500, it has kept the user friendly design concept. However, with the addition of a fan speed control knob (± 10%), the ability to fine tune the temperature with 9 different settings (the SR 500 only had 3), you can really tweak your roast profiles to a very precise degree without adding too much complication to your home roasting.
For example, you can now begin your roast on a low temp, high fan speed, to warm and dry the beans while keeping them moving to avoid scorching. Once the beans are dry and yellow, you can turn the heat up to high, lower your fan speed to let the heat build so that you can ramp up to first crack quickly - still without scorching.
Finally, the SR540 has a real time temperature readout, a HUGE upgrade over previous models!
This roaster is a good choice for people who roast a wide variety of coffee (decaf, high grown hard bean, island coffees, etc.) or who use different brewing methods such as drip, French press or espresso.
By controlling time, temperature and air, you can turn out "just right" batches time and time again.
How it Works
The SR 540 is a "fluid bed" roaster. In this case the fluid is air. The machine depends on hot air flow to not only heat the beans, but also to agitate them. Coffee is like popcorn in that you need to keep it moving as it cooks. If it touches hot metal too long at a time it will scorch. The SR 540 accomplishes both things nicely. It has a nice strong fan motor to keep those beans in motion and a good heater to provide the correct roasting temperature. As long as you don't overload it and try to make the machine be something it's not, it really works very well.
Roasting Tips For the SR540
- Great batch size for a personal roaster--it roasts about 4.5 ounces of green coffee per batch. That's about 20 cups of coffee per roast, depending on your brewing ratio. Think about how much coffee you drink so you can calculate how much roasting you will be doing. Each roast will take about 10 minutes, depending greatly on how dark you roast. Since freshness is the name of the game, this is enough to last two or three days, and you'll always have fresh coffee without having to do multiple roastings.
- On cooler days, you can decrease the fan speed and increase the temperature to help compensate for lower ambient temperatures.
- In high summer, increase the fan speed to slow the roast and allow the body of your coffee to develop.
- Introduce a drying/warming stage at the beginning of your roast to help lighten the beans for more even roasting. Warming will also ease your beans into the roast a little better which will give you a more stable and consistent roast.
The SR540 includes a 1 year manufacturer warranty.
