Robusta coffee often gets a bad rap when compared to its much more popular brother, Arabica coffee. While it's not recommended as a single origin brew, it is very popular as a blender, especially in Italian style espresso. When added to blends in a small amount, usually 10-15%, it adds body, punch, tons of crema to espresso and a bit of extra caffeine for those looking for an added kick to their morning routine.
Our Review: "India Cherry Robusta AB is sourced from family owned farms located within the Sakleshpu and Coorg districts in the state of Karnataka, India. Coffee is cultivated on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biologically diverse places in the world with more than 5000 species of flowering plants and 508 different species of birds. Many of the farms have been in operation for nearly one-hundred years, passed down through the family from one generation to the next." - Royal Coffee
Coffee is divided into two major species, Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora, commonly known as Arabica and Robusta, respectively. Arabica is the undisputed superior bean of the two but Robusta has many attributes that often go overlooked. It contains nearly twice as much caffeine, has tons of body and from an agricultural standpoint, is significantly easier to grow and process. Despite that, we'll be honest, this coffee isn't meant to be enjoyed as a standalone cup. You can most certainly try it that way, especially if you've never tasted Robusta coffee before, but where it truly shines is as a blender. It is absolutely essential for making a traditional Italian style espresso, usually as 10-15% of the blend. It adds tons of crema to the espresso and prevents the crema from collapsing quickly. In small amounts, it will add body, punch and a boost of caffeine to any blend without detracting from the overall profile.
