Colombia Finca La Riviera Sudan Rume Natural
Of our 4 microlots from Finca La Riviera and Finca Milan, this one was declared the unanimous favorite! Sudan Rume is a heirloom variety that predates Bourbon and Typica. When naturally processed, it tastes like a combination of Ethiopian coffee and Yemeni coffee - sweet, fruity yet complex with old world depth. We got notes of strawberry, sangria, lemonade and a bouquet of florals along with a touch of maple syrup.
Sudan Rume (sometimes called Rume Sudan) is a coffee variety that’s believed to predate the cultivation of Bourbon and Typica. The reason it’s less popular than these more popular strains is due to its low commercial production. But it brings something also as important to the table: it’s is much more resistant to disease! That makes Sudan Rume a prime candidate for hybrid varieties, the most famous of which is SL-28 which is most commonly associated with Kenyan coffee. These days, Sudan Rume is making a comeback as a single variety because as it turns out, it’s super tasty! But thanks to its low production, it’s still a pretty rare fine as a single variety.
When naturally processed, Sudan Rume typically tastes like a blend of Ethiopian and Yemen coffee, which makes perfect sense considering its heirloom heritage. This lot is a prime example – we got notes of ripe strawberry, lemonade and a bouquet of florals that reminded us of an Ethiopian natural, as well as winey notes like sangria and cocoa powder reminiscent of the old world depth a Yemen usually brings to the table. As the cup cools, the flavors tame up a bit and the sangria fades to a refreshing raspberry lemonade flavor. It’s gently bright, complex and intensely sweet with a syrupy texture. All told, of the 4 Colombia Microlots we received from Finca La Riviera and Finca Milan, this coffee was UNIVERSALLY everyone’s favorite!

Recommended Roast Range: City to Full City (Light to medium)
We like this coffee best at City to Full City (Light to medium), Most roasters will have the best results at City+ (Light-medium) or near the end of 1st crack. If you’re looking for more vibrant citrus notes and florality, end the roast as early as 30 seconds to 1 minute into 1st crack. Full City roasts (between 1st and 2nd crack) will offer more rounded maple syrup and molasses sweetness as well as a bigger body. We don’t recommend pushing this coffee into 2nd crack or you’ll risk turning the winey notes acrid.
