Our Review: Here at The Captain's Coffee, we are always stocking great coffees, but it really excites us to get great coffees with a great story. This Sumatra Aceh is one of those coffees. Aceh is a coffee growing region in Northern Sumatra which produces some of the best coffee in Indonesia. Farmers in this region use a traditional washing method unique to Sumatra called "giling basah." As a general rule, coffees from Aceh tend to be on the brighter side and cleaner than coffees produced from the Mandheling region. Now on to what makes this particular coffee so unique! This coffee is produced entirely from the Adsenia varietal, which is one of the oldest coffees in the area, and many of the farmers are women who tragically lost their husbands during the 2003 civil war. These women have fought hard to compete in a male-dominated culture and have become a respected part of the local industry. Their goal is to produce a fine coffee so that they may support the widows and children in the area and provide for a better future for their cooperative. Nothing like strong coffee produced by strong women!

This particular lot is also a triple pick, which means it was sorted three times in order to provide the absolute best beans for processing. Many Sumatran coffees are guilty of being a mixed bag of uneven and inconsistently sized beans with many defects (which granted can sometimes result in a really cool and odd cup), but this one has been sorted three times in order to provide the most consistent and high quality cup possible. Like all high quality Sumatran coffees, this bean is very dense and handles dark roasting very well. In fact, we think that's where is shines brightest, somewhere between a Full City + and Vienna roast. It's got notes of baker's chocolate, cedar, pipe tobacco and just a bit of earthy spice. a very syrupy mouthfeel. While a bit brighter than it's Mandheling cousin, this Aceh is still on the low end of the acidity scale favoring a robust body and long finish. This coffee is also a bit more "refined" than Mandheling coffees, which have more of a "raw",  earthy character.
