This offering comes from one of our favorite Central American producers. Rustic sweetness, milky smooth body, very balanced and smooth. Lovely notes of milk chocolate, orange and a walnut finish.

Roasting: Start at City + (light-medium) and go a bit darker as desired. We find it best not to go any darker than Full City + (medium dark) or you lose the subtle orange and creamy texture of this coffee. The amazing thing is how rich this coffee is at lighter roasts!

Our Review

Marcala is a municipality in Southwestern Honduras, near La Paz. The land is known particularly for its exceptional coffee, which has exceeded its reputation throughout the national and international coffee market. There are some registries of coffee producing farms from 1937-38. However, the modernization and intensification of production did not occur until the early 1970s, which coincides with the arrival of German families to Marcala. To this day, coffee crops have become one of Marcala’s most precious patrimonies. To protect the prestige, the quality, and the namesake of coffee from this region, in 2005 a DOP (Protected Origin Denomination) was awarded to Café de Marcala, which was the first awarded to a Central American country.

The COMSA coop has been producing consistently excellent coffee like this one for years now and their expertise really shows in the cup. This bean has a rustic, earthy sweetness that reminds me of brown sugar or perhaps sugar in the raw. This makes me hesitate to really call this a "sweet" coffee in the sense that most people think of it. This is an very balanced and smooth coffee with notes of milk chocolate and orange.  A very pleasent nutty, earthy character finishes it off nicely.
