From small farms in Tanzania's southern most province. Small, hard, dense beans. Notes of peach and black tea with just a hint of lemon. Delightful first cup of the day.

Arrival Date: January 9th, 2017

Acidity & Brightness: Bright, crisp and sweet

Balance & Finish: Good balance, moderately long, sweet finish

Body & Texture: Medium bodied, syrupy mouthfeel

Flavors: Peach, tangerine, black tea and a touch of lemon

Grade: Peaberry

Processing: Fully Washed

Varieties: Arusha and Bourbon

Roasting:  Start with a Full City (Medium), or just at the very beginning of 2nd crack, and adjust for your individual tastes from there. We like this one fairly light because of the citrus and crispness which really shine in lighter roasts. The bean is dense enough to handle a dark roast, and you might find you prefer it that way.

Recommendation:  For people who enjoy a lively cup with shimmering citrus notes.  Although not as bold as a Kenyan coffee, it is very enjoyable.  It makes a great breakfast coffee, particularly with pancakes or French toast.

Reminder:  This is raw coffee.  You have to roast it before brewing!

Our Review: Ruvuma is in southern Tanzania, a district named for the adjoining river.  Although Tanzania produces some excellent flat bean coffee, the country is most famous for its peaberry.  So much so that when talking about Tanzanian coffee, you almost say it as one word--"Tanzaniapeaberry".  And a really nice word it is.

Most coffee cherries produce a double seed, like a pecan.  The sides of the coffee bean that face each other are flat, giving us the term "flat bean".  Occasionally, coffee cherries contain only a single, rounded, oval seed.  When this happens, the beans are called "peaberry".  Often, as in this case, peaberry coffee is marketed as a separate grade instead of being mixed in with the regular beans.  Some coffee experts think that when a cherry produces only a single seed, more of the "essence" of the coffee is transmitted to the seed, resulting in a more intense flavor in the cup. There is disagreement over what causes the peaberry to form.  Some think it is a lack of water transmitted through the roots and branches to cherries on the upper and outer branches.  Some say it is a lack of boron in the soil.  Others claim it is a genetic trait.

Our selection from the Ruvuma district comes from a co-op formed by farmers from small holdings in the area.  Admittedly, we often prefer single estate coffees, but when we come across a really nice co-op coffee we gladly offer it to you.  While Tanzania coffee may not have the name recognition of nearby Kenya coffee, it is becoming more widely known every season, and coffees like this Ruvuma peaberry are one reason why.  This season's crop features a crisp, bright front end with great balance and a moderately long, sweet finish. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel and a tea-like body give way to flavors of peach, tangerine, black tea and just a hint of lemon.
