Home Roasting Supplies
The SR 300 roaster from Home Roasting Supplies was designed for folks who want a consistently good cup of coffee without a lot a fuss and complicated bells and whistles. It's operation is as simple as adding the beans, setting the time and turning it on. OK, well, maybe not quite. You do have to watch your coffee and, if it is approaching the roast level you want, you might need to press the cooling cycle button if the roast time you set hasn't expired and the cylcle begun automatically. Which is a lot easier to do than writing that sentence was.
The SR 300 is a totally new machine based on the Fresh Roast Plus, a roaster that was around for a long time and helped introduce a whole lot of people to the wonderful aromas and tastes of fresh home roasted coffee. Here's what we like about it:
Great batch size for a personal roaster--it roasts about 5 ounces of green coffee per batch. That's about 20 cups of coffee per roast, depending on your brewing ratio. Think about how much coffee you drink so you can calculate how much roasting you will be doing. Each roast will take about 10 minutes, depending greatly on how dark you roast. Since freshness is the name of the game, this is enough to last two or three days, and you'll always have fresh coffee without having to do multiple roastings.
Excellent bean visibility--it's very easy to watch your coffee during the roast and control how dark it gets.
Simple controls-about as basic as it gets. Up and down buttons to increase or decrease the roast time and a cool button to stop the roasting and begin the 3 minute cooling cycle if your coffee is getting "done" a bit earlier than you expected.
Small footprint and light weight--it measures about 7 inches in diameter and stands about a foot tall when the roast chamber and chaff collector are in position, so it will store easily. At about 5 pounds, it's small enough to take with you on vacation so you don't have to drink that store bought swill while relaxing in paradise!
How it Works
The SR 300 is a "fluid bed" roaster. In this case the fluid is air. The machine depends on hot air flow to not only heat the beans, but also to agitate them. Coffee is like popcorn in that you need to keep it moving as it cooks. If it touches hot metal too long at a time it will scorch. The SR 300 accomplishes both things nicely. It has a nice strong fan motor to keep those beans in motion and a good heater to provide the correct roasting temperature. As long as you don't overload it and try to make the machine be something it's not, it really works very well.
The SR 300 is so simple to use, we can't really give you a lot of "tips and techniques". But then again, since it is so simple, you really don't need much. We include a free copy of our exclusive "Roasting 101" guide to get you started. Despite what some people may try to tell you, coffee roasting is not rocket science. It is cooking. A fairly specialized form, but still cooking. You can certainly get fairly sophisticated, using machines with variable temperatures and fan speeds, or you can be simple, easy, and very, very good. If you are looking for excellence without complication, then the SR 300 is the right choice for you.
