Our Review: Colombia and Viet Nam run neck and neck as the number two and three biggest exporters of coffee in the world. The main difference is that Viet Nam exports mostly robusta, while Colombia exports mostly mountain grown Arabica. Sort of like comparing Florida (oranges) and Washington (apples) as to which is larger in terms of exporting "fruit". Anyway, you get the picture.
Before specialty coffee began to be recognized and appreciated in America in the early 1980s, coffee here consisted mainly of Brazilian and Colombian beans. If people were aware of different coffee growing regions at all, it was only in the vaguest sense and probably was just known as South American, African or Java. Almost no single origin coffee was available--everything was a "blend" from the vast sea of commercial coffee beans. Then along came Juan Valdez and Mrs. Olsen. Suddenly we became aware of Colombia and "mountain grown" coffee. To a large extent, Colombian coffee evolution stopped at that point for a long time. All things considered, Colombia was a late comer to the specialty coffee revolution. Colombia is well capable of growing some outstanding coffee. When you think about the amount of coffee coming out of the country, their efforts at marketing those top tier beans seems a little underwhelming. Most of it is still sold simply as "Colombian", perhaps with the word "Supremo" attached which is actually nothing more than a grading of the bean size (17-18 screen), and not really a grade of quality or flavor. Interesting.
That is changing. Several distinct farms are maketing their coffee under their own estate names. In co-op produced coffee, region or district names are being applied and becoming better known. This more distinct labeling is indrectly causing the quality to improve--if your name is on something, you want it to be good!
That is sort of what has happened with our Colombia Royal Select Water Processed Decaf. The coffee comes from Royal Coffee (New York and Oakland). Royal became concerned with the poor quality (and taste) of decaf coffee and decided to do something about it. They select the beans to be decaffienated instead of allowing the exporters to just send whatever beans they want to the decaffienation plant. They also select the plant (a state of the art faclility in Mexico). Then they follow up with very stringent quality control. The result is a very, very nice cup of decaf coffee. And the process is simple--select outsanding coffee, decaffienate it using the best possible method and equipment, store and ship the coffee with care, and watch it every step of the way. Simple. Yeah, right.
If you are unsatisfied with your green coffee purchase, we will issue you a refund in the form of an in-store credit. Since coffee is a food item, we can't take it back once it leaves our control. We will work closely with you to insure you get the quality you expected at a price that is fair. This offer is good for 30 days from the date of shipment. We will faithfully adhere to this policy for every customer, unless that customer is repeatedly abusing it. We withold the right to deny refunds, in rare cases, where a customer is repeatedly ordering coffee and then asking for a refund.

The Gene Cafe and Behmor 1600 Plus are covered by a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer. The Fresh Roast SR-300 and SR-500 come with a 1 year warranty on the base unit and a 6 month warranty on the chaff collector, top cap and basket. Since the roasters are UL certified, the manufacturers ask that we refer all warranty issues directly to them. Although we do not directly provide repair service, we'll help you through the process to get your roaster back up and running. Should you return an unused roaster to us, we will refund your purchase minus the original shipping cost. Once you've used your roaster, we really can't take it back.
Any item not covered by a manufacturer's warranty is warranted by The Captain's Coffee to meet or exceed your expectations. If you are dissatisfied with your purchase for any reason, you may return the item to The Captain's Coffee for a replacement or refund in the form of an in-store credit. This offer is good for 30 days from the date of shipment. If applicable, the manufacturer's warranty will supersede this warranty for items sold by The Captain's Coffee.
We currently ship to any location in the US with the notable exception that Note that Hawaii Department of Agriculture regulations won't allow us to ship raw coffee to Hawaii.
If you select the "Captain's Special" shipping method, please note that the choice of carrier and delivery method is then entirely at our discretion. For local pick-ups, please allow 24 hours for us to prepare your order before dropping by to pick it up. Shipping weight is calculated in US Pounds.
