Our Review: "Ramon Chinchilla grows coffee in an often under-represented and little-known corner of Colombia’s northeastern mountains along the border of Venezuela in the remote Cesár department. The Serrania del Perijá mountain range eventually feeds into the same Andean cord that passes through Bogotá and on southward; however, this far north there is considerable Caribbean influence in the climate, even at the highest elevations, creating an ecosystem unique to the rest of Colombia, including to nearby Sierra Nevada. The soil here is much drier and siltier, and less retentive of water overall, requiring growers to be more intentional about shade management and erosion prevention. Ramon bought his 11.5 hectare plot 18 years ago with a vision of uniting his wife and sons around a natural existence, working closely together, and helping to carry on the organic farming methods historical to the area." - Royal Coffee
This is our first offering from the Cesár department and now that we've cupped it, it won't be our last! It's always especially nice when we get hold of not only a single origin, but a single estate as well. The care Ramon and his family have put into each coffee bean is evident. I'm not sure if it's a regional difference or just this estate, but I found this coffee to be surprisingly soft and sweet for a Colombian coffee. It reminds me more of Peruvian coffee with a Colombian bent! Either way, it's super easy drinking and sure to be a crowd pleaser. Well balanced with a gentle front end followed by a full body and creamy texture. The finish is long and kinda biscuity, like a hard baked cookie! Expect notes of caramel, ripe green apple and a hint of pomegranate.
