Tanzania Northern Peaberry

This classic Tanzanian Peaberry is grown near the country's northern border with Kenya and you can taste some of the similarities. Crisp and just slightly wine-y, it's got balanced flavors of milk chocolate and tangerine with a hint of lime.

Roasting: We prefer this coffee Full City to Full City + (Medium to Medium-Dark). This will maintain the crisp, citrus-y notes and still bring out the body. It roasts very evenly and you can take it darker if you wish for a bit more body and to tone down the brightness, but avoid roasts much darker than Full City +.

Our Review: Tanzania is synonymous with Peaberry these days. It's a well earned reputation as Tanzanian producers quickly realized they were filling a niche in the coffee market and over the years have begun to specialize in producing some of the world's finest peaberry coffees. 

For those who don't yet know, a peaberry is simply a coffee bean that didn't split in two during the maturation process. This results in a smaller bean that is round instead of two beans that are flat on one side. Some coffee experts believe peaberry beans to have a more subtle, delicate profile compared to their normal counterparts, others argue there is little discernible difference between the two from the same plant. We don't care as long as it's just good coffee!

This particular peaberry comes from the Northern Highlands of Tanzania on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The region is right on the border of Kenya and you can taste some similarities between the two country's coffees in the cup. There's a hint of the Kenyan winey-ness along with the characteristic fruity balance found in most Tanzanian coffees. The body is smooth and silky with a clean, slightly sweet finish. Look for notes of milk chocolate, tangerine and a hint of lime.
